Me Ho ‘okahi Leo Wale No-With Just One Voice

Summary

The 2nd Annual Native Hawaiian Convention marked another groundbreaking convention with speakers from the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands, Office of Native Hawaiian Affairs, Kamehameha Schools, First Hawaiian Bank and the State’s Community Economic Division. Participants came from throughout the state, across the nation and around the Pacific, representing the business community, federal and state governments, Indian Country, Alaska Native and Native Hawaiians. 

This year’s convention theme was Me Ho ‘okahi Leo Wale No-With Just One Voice which honored the many voices of our community as a powerful call to engage ideas and solutions for our peers. The convention was filled with talent from our community here in Hawaii and other communities beyond the shores.  Each speaker shared valuable manao and experiences to take with us as we embark on another year. The diversity that is Hawaii’s strength is in fact the very diversity that will carry Just One Voice in being decisive and resolving important community development and policy issues affecting Native Hawaiians.

Keynote Speakers included:

  • Honorable Daniel Akaka, United States Senator
  • Janice Whitney, Environmental Protection Agency
  • Rick West, Director, National Museum of the American Indian
  • Dee Jay Mailer, CEO, Kamehameha Schools
  • Pikake Pelekai, Executive Director State Council of Hawaiian Homestead Associations

Special Events also included:

  • Legacy  Luncheon – A Tribute to Senator Akaka and His Life’s Work: The Legacy Luncheon honored a special Hawaiian man, Senator Daniel Kahikina Akaka, for his efforts on behalf of Native Hawaiians, the state of Hawaii and native peoples everywhere.  This luncheon event featured ono Hawaiian food, Hawaiian music &video presentation, and a surprise announcement to the Senator and his family in appreciation of the contribution to our people.
  • Na Pua o Alaka’I – In Honor of Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV: CNHA honored the lives and legacies of Hawaii’s beloved ali’I, Queen Emma and King Kamehameha IV.  The evening featured rarely seen artifacts from their reign and performances by the Queen Emma Hawaiian Civic Club Choir
  • Na Leo Oiwi – Native Voices Concert: This year’s concert will benefit Na Pualei o Likolehua, A haulau dedicated to develop and nurture kumu hula.  Our exciting line up includes Native Hawaiian bands, Kauha’a, Kilinahe, Mahiehie, and Na Hoku award winning Na Palapalai.  The concert also featured kahiko performances by Na Pualei o Likolehua and a guest appearance by the Yaaw Tei Ti dance group (Tlingit/Haida)
